No. The wooden slats support most innerspring queen and extra-long twin-size mattresses. For a memory foam mattress, you will need a solid surface to keep it from sinking. If you plan to use a memory foam mattress, you can add a 1/8” thick masonite board or extra slats to your order. These options are available in the Accessories tab above.Will I need a box spring?
Box springs are not necessary on the Twin XL Over Queen Bunk Bed. In fact, we recommend not using one to avoid wasting valuable headspace.How is the ladder attached to the bed frame?

Bed is delivered on a pallet and there were around 11 cartons and they are heavy, so be sure you have a hand truck or some strong help to unload the pallet. The written instructions weren’t as detailed as I would have liked but they have a YouTube video instruction that is great. Simple to assemble and love that there is just one size screws and washers and a supplied Allen wrench and hammer to assemble. We made a few missteps that were easily corrected but in all not hard to assemble but does take 2 people. Buy their mattresses, they are wonderful! Once you get orientated with the parts, the links to the instruction video became the final touch that made this a 5 star product. This bed has a very sturdy presence and precision machined appeal in the aluminum structuring I would purchase the triple decker California King if I had the space and use for it. Although I'm using this Queen over Queen for my 4 boys 11 and under, I will be recommending this product to all my friends and business partners as a possible solution for AirBnb or Hospitality solutions for sure. I went ahead and installed a few 90deg metal brackets to the studs on the wall sides of the lower and upper braces and this bunk bed isn't going anywhere. Clearly a superior product.
