No. The wooden slats support most innerspring mattresses. For a memory foam mattress, you will need a solid surface to keep it from sinking. If you plan to use a memory foam mattress, you can add a 1/8” thick masonite board or extra slats to your order. These options are available in the Accessories tab above.Will I need a box spring?
Box springs are not necessary on the Adult Bunk Bed. In fact, we recommend not using one to avoid wasting valuable headspace.How is the ladder attached to the bed frame?

We ordered 2 bunks for a room at our lake place (a Queen Over Queen and Twin XL Over Twin XL). Delivery was great and we were able to move the pallet right into our garage. My husband and I put the beds together and had no problems. Some reviews talked about the queen over queen not being solid and swaying some but we don't find that with ours at all. They are sturdy and will NOT budge. They're definitely bunkbeds meant to last and we couldn't be happier! (The one thing I would say is, even if you plan to have the head of the bed against a wall, you still need the pillow bars - on one of ours, against the wall, the pillows fall between the bed and the wall - there's more space there than we envisioned). We are happy buyers and would recommend these beds to anyone!
