No. The wooden slats support most innerspring twin size mattresses. For a memory foam mattress, you will need a solid surface to keep it from sinking. If you plan to use a memory foam mattress, you can add a 1/8” thick masonite board or extra slats to your order. These options are available in the Accessories tab above.Will I need a box spring?
Box springs are not necessary on the Twin Over Twin Bunk Bed. In fact, we recommend not using one to avoid wasting valuable headspace.How is the ladder attached to the bed frame?
The standard ladder is detachable and can be placed anywhere around the bunk bed. It securely clips to the aluminum frame and will not move when it’s in use.How far does the ladder extend?
If your Twin Over Twin Bunk Bed is built for a 9’ ceiling, the ladder extends 20” from the end of the bed. We also make a version that only extends 13” from the bed at no cost. For $30, we can build a ladder that only extends 6” from the bed frame. You can request these custom ladder options in the Notes section during checkout.What are the dimensions of the staircase?

So far this has been a fantastic purchase!! Both my roommate and I are very pleased with the beds. If I had any criticism, it would be that I'd love to see the beds have the criss-cross strength members on the ends, like on the loft beds, to prevent a bit of sway that the beds do have. Nothing that would prevent me from recommending the bunks, but just an observation after sleeping on the top bunk for a few months. Overall, a great purchase!!!

My only complaint is that I didn't know of them sooner! After 13 years in the vacation rental business, I wish I could go back and apologize to all my adult guests who had to climb up and sleep in typical wood, creaky bunk beds on their vacation. Wow, worth the Investment. We purchased the Queen Over Queen Bunk Bed, and I can honestly say it's the only thing that would be left standing in a catastrophic event. My two young sons share the Top when we are visiting the mountains and it doesn't even jiggle when they climb in. Boys are destructive, but the bed is indestructible. I would suggest the corner support brackets and even though there is a video showing 2 people putting together once you have to set the vertical elements it really needs 4 people, We did mange with 3, but it was touch and go a couple times for a dent in the floor. LOVE LOVE LOVE this bed! and great customer service on setting delivery and assembly.
