No. The wooden slats support most innerspring twin size mattresses. For a memory foam mattress, you will need a solid surface to keep it from sinking. If you plan to use a memory foam mattress, you can add a 1/8” thick masonite board or extra slats to your order. These options are available in the Accessories tab above.Will I need a box spring?
Box springs are not necessary on the Twin Over Twin Bunk Bed. In fact, we recommend not using one to avoid wasting valuable headspace.How is the ladder attached to the bed frame?
The standard ladder is detachable and can be placed anywhere around the bunk bed. It securely clips to the aluminum frame and will not move when it’s in use.How far does the ladder extend?
If your Twin Over Twin Bunk Bed is built for a 9’ ceiling, the ladder extends 20” from the end of the bed. We also make a version that only extends 13” from the bed at no cost. We went with the 10' ceiling version (our ceilings are probably around 12' total) and it's a great compromise: there's enough area above to sit in the bed comfortable, and I (~6' tall) almost don't bash my head from underneath. Using a loft bed increased our floor space by approximately 30 sqft, which is quite a bargain considering NYC prices. The construction is well documented, using premium materials (really liked the screws that came with the bed) and well designed: no squeaking, rocking and feels extremely stable.
