Does the California King Bunk Bed require a special type of mattress?
No. The wooden slats support most innerspring California king-size mattresses. For a memory foam mattress, you will need a solid surface to keep it from sinking. If you plan to use a memory foam mattress, you can add a 1/8” thick masonite board or extra slats to your order. These options are available in the Accessories tab above.Will I need a box spring?
Box springs are not necessary on the California King Bunk Bed. In fact, we recommend not using one to avoid wasting valuable headspace.How is the ladder attached to the bed frame?
The standard ladder is detachable and can be placed anywhere around the bunk bed. It securely clips to the aluminum frame and will not move when it’s in use.How far does the ladder extend?
If your California King Bunk Bed is built for a 9’ ceiling, the ladder extends 20” from the end of the bed. We also make a version that only extends 13” from the bed at no cost. These things ROCK!!! We bought 3 queen-over-queen and 1 full-over-queen for a mountain house. 2 of the queen-over-queens are in the bunk room ,and everyone who has slept on them loves them. Everyone comments about how comfortable and sturdy they are. The other rooms we did a stand alone queen-over-queen and then the full-over-queen. Again, nothing but compliments. I could not be happier with the fit and finish. Putting them together....like anything does take some time. The first go around, we did have to take the first one apart and redo it. Not the instructions fault; more of a communication issue. We looked for a lot of beds and found these and have been very pleased. They are pricey but we NEVER plan on replacing them. I have and will continue to recommend these beds to everyone and anyone!!

I called customer service and they sent me 8 reinforcement braces and it solved the problem (it does require drilling into the frame). If you order a bed, I would order the reinforcement braces.
