Does the California King Loft Bed require a special type of mattress?
No. The wooden slats support most innerspring California king size mattresses. For a memory foam mattress, you will need a solid surface to keep it from sinking. If you plan to use a memory foam mattress, you can add a 1/8” thick masonite board or extra slats to your order. These options are available in the Accessories tab above.Will I need a box spring?
Box springs are not necessary on the California King Loft Bed. In fact, we recommend not using one to avoid wasting valuable headspace.Are the x-braces required on the loft bed frame?
Yes. The x-braces are what make the California King Loft Bed stable and safe for adult use.How is the ladder attached to the bed frame?
The standard ladder is detachable and can be placed anywhere around the loft bed. It securely clips to the aluminum frame and will not move when it’s in use.How far does the ladder extend?
If your loft bed is built for a 9’ ceiling, the ladder extends 20” from the end of the bed. We also make a version that only extends 13” from the bed at no cost. The bed frame is good. It’s strong and sturdy. I bought the 8ft, and it didn’t match my height when I was under the bed using my computer. I don’t even know why the 8ft exist. I tried to talked to customer service to exchange, but they’re charging shipping fee and restocking fee. They recommend I salvage the the bed post and braces. So I’m taking the advice. I’m going to order new bed posts and braces for 10ft. It’s going to cost me about $2000. If I didn’t bought the set. I would never proceed with the order. I wish they put the measurement very visible when I was ordering the loft bed.

This is a loft for my son's college dorm. It is high quality and easy to assemble. My only complaint would be the shipping packaging. Several components were delivered with dents, scratches and burrs from the shipping. We had ordered touch-up paint and with some filing and touch-ups we were satisfied, knowing that this won't be the last dings the bed frame gets. That said, I would invest in some research on packaging and how to better protect your product during shipping.

FABULOUSLY MADE BED!!! Love it! That part is great but...the packaging was very flimsy though for such heavy duty pieces being transported. Every box was shredding and some lost parts in the process. This, of course, was disappointing, but not as much as the stunning cold response. No apologies or concern whatsoever. Such poor customer service from her made a huge impact on me. I’m still upset about it. I do love the bed and wanted to call and discuss some other add-ons, but didn’t want to talk to the Gatekeeper. This review will probably not even make it to anyone else anyway as she probably mans this correspondence, as well.

I would love to give this loft bed 5 stars given that this is the most expensive piece of furniture that we have purchased and given that this product is made in the USA. Unfortunately, we didn't have the experience we were hoping to have with this bed starting with the assembly. We purchased this bed due to living in a small apartment with two small children. After taking apart the old bed and getting approximately halfway through building this new loft bed, we found that one of the pieces was defective and we were not able to finish building the bed for a few days. This was a major inconvenience for many reasons and also led to the bed being unnecessarily scratched while in a half built state. It took a few days to get everything fixed. We found a way to resolve this on our own, but we were certainly disappointed since we would have expected better quality checks and a much more concerned customer service response. We've purchased and built many pieces of furniture over the years and have never had this type of issue. Now that the bed is built, it's definitely a bit shakier than we would like. It's also very sensitive to having anything close to the bed or the x-brackets. For those in small spaces - just be careful to plan on not having anything that might be right next to the bed or leaning against any part of the bed since this increases the chance that it will creak/shake when on the bed and while climbing up to the bed. On the plus side, aside from being a bit creaky when we are on the bed, the bed does seem solid once it's built and as long as you don't have any defective pieces the assembly is relatively easy and the instructions are good.

Everything went together fairly easily, my only real complaint is the corners stick up a little higher than the rest of the bed (the part where the mattress/box spring rest on), and I had purchased a new tempur-pedic mattress, which requires a flat surface. So with their box spring (being a real thin one since this is a loft bed) being supported one essentially just the corners caused the longest sides to dip down. I was able to use the color samples to prop up the sagging portions of the box spring, so it works. Other than that the bed feels sturdy and I have not had any problems.

My only complaint is the pressure screws used to hold on the railing. Mine dropped and left 1.5 foot scratches down each end of the rail, gouged deep into the metal. I wish the rail mounts had been pre-drilled with holes that could support the railings with bolts instead. Otherwise, very happy. I set the entire thing up alone, easily, in maybe 6 hours (I was multitasking and not dedicating all my attention to it). When putting it together the frame felt like it might wobble but once all the bolts were tightened it was steady. I can't shake it even on purpose after I put the mattress on and I've had no issues. The stairs are beautiful and while they do wobble a little, so far they're holding up wonderfully. I like the ladder a lot more than similar ones I have seen online or in stores. My one suggestion to anyone considering purchasing a loft from Francis is to splurge on every add-on you think you might want in the future, as the pieces are custom made and not modular as far as I can tell. While I consider that a good thing, it also means I can't add curtains or shelves after the fact--and now I wish I had them! I have no regrets purchasing this bed. The employees were responsive and very nice helping me figure out my order correctly and get delivery straightened out. I definitely recommend this product!

It is very sturdy and safe. The process of putting it together wasn't arduous by any means. It is very well-made and everyone who sees it, is beyond envious. There is some shifting in the bed but I may need to just readjust the screws in a few places. The delivery driver didn't help me with unloading them to my home though and having to transport the boxes down a set of stairs and around to my back porch was quite exhausting! But aside from that chore, the bed itself is awesome and I happily recommend it to anyone looking to save space and upgrade.
