No. The wooden slats support most innerspring mattresses. For a memory foam mattress, you will need a solid surface to keep it from sinking. we assembled the Queen Loft bed yesterday and it is super super sturdy ! The old bunk we bought at IKEA swayed and \"squeaked\" every time we touched the ladder, but this Francis loft bed did not make any sounds. the ladder is secure and the legs are super sturdy. I\'m giving this only 4 stars because of the terrible instruction manual. The pictures were tiny and while each \"part\" was labeled with a letter at the top legend, they were not referenced at all in the actual instructions. Most manufacturers have a stickered letter on the pieces so you know what you\'re dealing with. IKEA assembly booklets run for pages and pages, with enlarged view clearly showing which direction the holes should be facing (and how not to face them) to avoid error and having to \"take it apart and re-do.\" There isn\'t a picture of the \"final\" part diagram detailing where they considered what \"front\" vs. \"back\" was; so while we thought \"back\" legs meant \"foot board\" side, their \"back\" referred to the side of the bed that goes against the wall, furthest from you. Their first step was to assemble guard rail to \"front bed posts\" - but the pictures are so tiny, there was really NO way to know definitively which of the 4 legs were considered \"front\" - and needless to say we had to remount the brackets 2x before we got it right since we had bought an additional end guard rail. I think this should the LAST step once all of the pieces come together, and not the FIRST step when you can\'t even understand what they consider to be left / right / front / back. Altogether, took 2 of us 4-5 hours to full assemble due to bad instructions.
