No. The wooden slats support most innerspring mattresses. For a memory foam mattress, you will need a solid surface to keep it from sinking. If you plan to use a memory foam mattress, you can add a 1/8” thick masonite board or extra slats to your order. These options are available in the Accessories tab above.Will I need a box spring?

One was a eastern king and the other a cal king with cal kings on top. They came in 6 or 7 sturdy boxes. My son-in-law put one bed together in a couple of hours. They are so sturdy and strong. I am a 6'5" man and my wife is 5'8", so we we struggled to find a loft bed that was suitable for us. The loft bed holds us both great and doesn't sway or rock or squeak as we feared. It's very sturdy. Our only complaint is the way the ladder attaches to the bed. We like the flexibility to put it wherever we want on the bed, but it slides around everywhere (quite dangerously sometimes). It would be great to have something that holds the ladder in place laterally even if it's just Velcro or something. For this we took off 1 star but otherwise no complaints at all.
