No. The wooden slats support most innerspring mattresses. For a memory foam mattress, you will need a solid surface to keep it from sinking. If you plan to use a memory foam mattress, you can add a 1/8” thick masonite board or extra slats to your order. These options are available in the Accessories tab above.Will I need a box spring?

Best bed frame I've ever bought. I love sleeping high above everything. And my work desk fits under very nicely. The bed is super sturdy. Two full sized people can fit just fine. It doesn't shake or sway at all. Easy to disassemble if your moving to a new location. The rubber on the leg posts won't damage the floor. Tye only problem I have is the ladder. Is shifts sometime before it is not bolted to the bed. When climbing the ladder it doesn't move, but if you bump it in passing it will shift some and need to be adjusted back to where you had it. All-in-all it is the best bed frame. The price wasn't bad either.

I have a purple hybrid 4 on it, a very tall and very heavy mattress. After a month of paranoia, checking the bolts and looking for bending, I found absolutely no movement or play.
