No. The wooden slats support most innerspring mattresses. For a memory foam mattress, you will need a solid surface to keep it from sinking. I was dubious that I could put a Sleep Number mattress five feet off the ground and put my adult self in it, but this bed is unbelievably sturdy. Not only that, but I was able to take it apart and put it back together multiple times. It's not only easy to assemble and disassemble, but due to the construction method, there is no loss in structural stability if you need to move it. I highly recommend if you are putting anyone other than a small child in the "upstairs" of either a loft or bunk bed. Also, the bookshelf stairs are amazing. They are a furniture piece in their own right that could be used even if you for whatever reason no longer needed the bed.
