No. The wooden slats support most innerspring mattresses. For a memory foam mattress, you will need a solid surface to keep it from sinking. If you plan to use a memory foam mattress, you can add a 1/8” thick masonite board or extra slats to your order. These options are available in the Accessories tab above.Will I need a box spring?

I believe the weight limit is 2,000 lbs! You will not find that anywhere else. It is also great to have the space underneath, as she has made it her study cubby, complete with a desk, bookcase, beanbag chair, and furry rug she lounges on to read. We hung filmy curtains around the sides and it is so cozy! She chose the bronze color; it is unique and looks very nice with her black and white decor. These beds are amazing — very high quality and they are machined and painted very well. My daughter and I put it together in about two hours.
