No. The wooden slats support most innerspring mattresses. For a memory foam mattress, you will need a solid surface to keep it from sinking. These bunk beds are bombproof and surprisingly light. I was transporting a 3-piece section of the frame over the San Francisco Bay Bridge, and the high winds blew it off the back of my truck. I was going nearly 60mph but the frame somehow stayed intact! The only bit that bent was the aluminum brackets that secured the sections together. Even the ladder stayed in one piece. We have a beach house with many adults sleeping in both the top and lower bunk beds.
