No. The wooden slats support most innerspring mattresses. For a memory foam mattress, you will need a solid surface to keep it from sinking. Queen Over Queen and Full Over Queen with stairs between. Looks awesome and quite sturdy - not as 100% wobble-free as hoped - but very secure and expected to be incredibly durable. Dearly hope I never have to replace carpet in the room as it all weighs close to 1,000 lb combined shipping weight. Everything was very well packed and delivered with zero damage. Included everything needed - even a hammer for the tacks. Instructions and videos were great. A 65-year-old CPA assembled it all with just a tiny bit of assistance from his wife. Took my time - one day to unpack and stage all of the pieces, one day for 1st bunk, and one day for 2nd bunk and stairs (not all day on any day - 3-4 hours a day). Costs literally thousands less than having custom built locally from wood.

I've been a contractor for 26 years. I like things that are designed and engineered well. This product is just that! Once you get orientated with the parts, the links to the instruction video became the final touch that made this a 5 star product. This bed has a very sturdy presence and precision machined appeal in the aluminum structuring I would purchase the triple decker California King if I had the space and use for it. Although I'm using this Queen over Queen for my 4 boys 11 and under, I will be recommending this product to all my friends and business partners as a possible solution for AirBnb or Hospitality solutions for sure. I went ahead and installed a few 90deg metal brackets to the studs on the wall sides of the lower and upper braces and this bunk bed isn't going anywhere. Clearly a superior product.
