No. The wooden slats support most innerspring mattresses. For a memory foam mattress, you will need a solid surface to keep it from sinking. We absolutely love our bunk bed! We went with the 10' ceiling version (our ceilings are probably around 12' total) and it's a great compromise: there's enough area above to sit in the bed comfortable, and I (~6' tall) almost don't bash my head from underneath. Using a loft bed increased our floor space by approximately 30 sqft, which is quite a bargain considering NYC prices. The construction is well documented, using premium materials (really liked the screws that came with the bed) and well designed: no squeaking, rocking and feels extremely stable. These beds are absolutely amazing. They are so strong and sturdy. The single beds are great as well but the bunk beds are incredible. We have a beach house with many adults sleeping in both the top and lower bunk beds. The people sleeping on the the bottom bed say they can not even tell someone is sleeping in the bed above them it is so quiet and restful.
