No. The wooden slats support most innerspring mattresses. For a memory foam mattress, you will need a solid surface to keep it from sinking. If you plan to use a memory foam mattress, you can add a 1/8” thick masonite board or extra slats to your order. These options are available in the Accessories tab above.Will I need a box spring?

We got a white Twin Over Twin Bunk Bed for our 5 year old twins (their 7 year old brother got a matching white Twin Loft Bed) - we ordered together so the heights were sure to match and altogether it looks AMAZING!!! Because the rails are outside of the frame, you can't have beds completely up against each other (unless you take off the rails, and for kids, you really need all 4 rails up), but they're close enough that it looks great. The bunk is super steady, if one of the people is moving around it jiggles a tiny bit but nothing like the bunks I'm used to. We got the ladder and our 3 kids have no trouble using it, even going up and over the side rail which is the trickiest part. The only negative comment I have is about the bottom bunk, there's no lip or anything to keep the mattress in place. You could probably buy a grippy mat to put under it? So far it's not an issue for us but I could see some wild kids pushing it off the frame, and it slides around a bit when I'm making the bed, but overall it's not a big enough problem to have me love the bunk any less! :)

I purchased 2 sets of Queen Over Queen Bunk Beds for one of my rental homes. They are extremely sturdy and look great. Instructions could've been a little better on assembly. We ordered extra slats to accommodate memory foam mattresses, doing this increased the weight significantly. Be prepared to have 6 people lift this size bed up and an extra body to screw in the bolts. Overall 100% satisfied with the end result and will be doing the same purchase for 2 of our other properties.

I have to say that I wanted to LOVE the beds so much... but there are some details that made my experience below average. 1. The posts were wrongly labeled, and I realized when I had part of the bed already put together. As a result, I scratched the posts a bit while I was taking some screws off in order to reassemble. 2. The railing design is not the best, and it is very difficult to get the horizontal posts straight, which makes it harder to fit it in the supports. 3. I paid extra for the masonite boards and they really do not work very well, for the price of the bed, it should only be a single piece board that I could just sit on the bed, not 4 or 5 different ones! It is very difficult to align the pieces to the bed planks and when I manage to align them, the movement of the mattress make them fall apart. Not great. I did not have time yet, but I am planning to follow up with a phone call, at least to see if the masonite could be replaced. Thanks
