The kids have officially moved out. Maybe you’ve been dreaming of this day for years, or maybe your feelings are a bit more bittersweet–either way, you have the opportunity to redesign your living area to make more room for your own passions (while still having room for the whole family to comfortably visit).

It’s time to reconfigure your space to suit this new era of your home. Though your kids will always occupy space in your heart, their beds don’t need to take up as much room in your home. Here are a few tips to help make the most of your home during this transition, and make a little more room for yourself.

The Combined Bedroom

Your three bedroom home now only has two full time occupants. Instead of leaving two bedrooms out of commission, why not merge two together with a bunk bed? A Full, Queen, or even King sized bunk will give each sleeper plenty of space, and leave you with a full room at your disposal. Dreaming of a home gym but just haven’t had the space? It’s finally time to take that treadmill out of storage!

The Multipurpose Room

If you’re not quite ready to fully rearrange or would prefer to keep your kid’s bedroom mostly intact, there’s another option: the loft bed. Leave the posters on the wall, but swap the bed out for a loft to add a whole dimension of free space. Place a desk and some shelves underneath, and voilà–the bedroom doubles as the craft room or home office of your dreams.
